About: Complex PTSD and chronic pain often occur together. However, because Complex PTSD was only recently recognized as a formal diagnosis in the ICD-11 (the World Health Organization's classification system), there has not yet been much research into how common this overlap is. Among the general population, as many as 20% of people may experience both PTSD and chronic pain at the same time (Sigveland et al., 2017), and this figure is even higher in some groups of people (Nahin, 2017). In this workshop, Dr. Rebecca McDermott will discuss the creation of a step-by-step treatment program that brings together what we know from both the chronic pain and trauma fields, offering a structured, evidence-informed approach to care.


Presenter: Rebecca McDermott, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Kingston Health Science Centre Chronic Pain Clinic providing assessment and psychotherapy to adult clients. Dr. McDermott received her masters and doctoral degrees from Western University and completed her psychology residency/internship at The Royal Ottawa Hospital. Dr. McDermott believes in the inherent worthiness, capacity, and value of everyone she works with. Her role is to bring excellent, evidence-based services and create an environment where her patients can acquire skills and thrive, while feeling valued and in control.
